Jazzie and a whelping box

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

We have eleven puppies now unfortunately Jazz crushed one in her sleep.

This often happens with large litters and big breeds. There is few things that the breeder can do to prevent puppies from being crushed.

Whelping box should have railings which give puppies extra space. Take a look at our whelping box and you will see what I mean.

Your whelping box should be ready about 2-3 weeks before whelping time. The dog has to get used to it otherwise she will find her own place to give birth that may not be the most appropriate like you closet or your bed .

Whelping box should be large enough for the dog to lay down in it but do not make it to big because puppies can wonder off and get cold easily .

It is a good idea to buy heated whelping nest because it keeps all pups together and prevents them from wandering off to the side where their mom can accidentally lay down on them and hurt them.

If puppy is not breathing

pull their tongue just a little bit, close the mouth and tilt their head just a little to open their Airway. Give them 4 -5 breaths from your (guess what?) mouth to their nose! This is Mouth-to-Snout resuscitation. You’ll want to give them just enough air to make the chest rise. Big dogs need more - little dogs or cats much less. Remember not to give too much air! You don’t want to hurt them.

If there is a pulse, but no breathing start Mouth-to-Snout resuscitation giving 1 breath every 3 seconds. For cats or really small dogs, give 1 breath every 2 seconds

Rocky is white with Tan spot with black tiger strips through them. His is very calm for a puppy he listens very well. He is great with the kids His only flaw is he loves food. Haha! He is very friendly. Let him out for the washroom and he doesn’t leave the premisses. Very well behaved. Great dogĀ  still has some growing up to do can’t wait to see how he matures.

Kascha is a balanced gentle girl. She is devoted to her family and excellent with my

son. She has a strong mind and body making her an excellent companion and worker.

Overall looks

Kascha is developing a sturdy muscular frame. Her check and neck are broad and

strong. She has a beautiful white coat with a brindle patch at the base of her tail

and right hind quarter. Her brow and muzzle are characteristic of the boxed Johnson

type.
