THIS IS HERSHEY’S STORY AND WHY WE ARE AGAINST BSL:

hershey-and-her-award.jpghershey-girl.jpg
Among her many wonderful charms is her new found stardom as a certified therapy dog with St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog Program in Southern Ontario.
Hershey’s smile is ear to ear when her bandana goes on and she knows it is time for work. Off she trots to visit her friends at the senior’s home.
Cookies are given out with lots of love and scratches. The visitors are full of stories of their day and kisses for Hershey and her therapy partner Miss Madigan, a beautiful fawn coloured Bull Mastiff.
Due to her outstanding service with the seniors and her restricted breed status in Ontario, Hershey was presented with an award from the Toronto Humane Society during Be Kind to Animals Week.
She received a medal and a few newspapers and news channels carried her story including the Toronto Star, The Toronto Sun, and City TV.

CTV highlighted her story with the seniors and it was shown throughout Ontario on the CTV news.
Hershey has a remarkable ability to find the people who need her the most. If someone is not feeling well that day she will be at their feet for most of the visit.
One time one of her regular seniors had to be put on oxygen to assist her breathing. When we arrived for the visit, Hershey went immediately to this lady and sat in front of her walker staring at the oxygen pump.
With every pump Hershey cocked her head to the side trying to figure what this new apparatus was. She then proceeded to walk over to sit beside her friend and place her head on her lap as if to say, “I’m not sure what is wrong but I’m here to help”. Hershey sat there for most of the visit.
This dog is a wonderfully warm, patient creature with a heart of gold and has a smile and a wag for every man, woman or child she meets.
She is a special soul and has changed many people’s opinions on the breed. She has attended many dog shows or special events only to be on her back the entire time with her four paws up in the air looking for belly rubs.
To be judged for her breed is a horrific situation and is very heart wrenching.
When we go out in public people cross the street when they see us coming, families have pointed her out and told their children, “these are dogs you have to stay away from.” Growing up as a child my parents taught me to never judge a book by its cover…you must look beneath to discover the true meaning of a person.
It is unfortunate that we must now move out to the country to give Hershey and her family some private spaces and freedom to run around without being persecuted for the beautiful creature that she is.
Thank you Hershey for sharing your life with us and showing me what a loyal, comical breed Pit Bulls can be. I will never live without one in my life.

Because of Breed Specific Legislation Hershey will no longer be able to be a Therapy Dog in Canada.
Sadly, Hershey along with all of the Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes are going to be removed from the Therapy dog program by August 29th 2006t
Breed Specific Legislation, people’s irrational fear, and the media hype effectively snuffed out the joy these dogs bring to people through their therapy work.
I don’t even know Hershey, or any of the Pit Bulls in Canada, but I feel deeply hurt by the fact they will no longer be able to comfort folks who look forward to their loving presence.

BULLOCK:
100_12921.JPG100_1279.JPG100_12872.JPG
“He arrived safe and sound.
We decided to name him Bullock…..the sheriff off of Deadwood. His first night
went great and my daughter just loves him.
Thank you very much and we will keep in touch.”
BULLWINKLE:
“She is doing great! At first she seemed tired and a bit
overwhelmed from the trip and the change in the environment. Now she
has adjusted and seems very happy. The other two Shi Tzus have
welcomed her and are figuring it out. The puppy’s name is Bullwinkle.
We recently got a very small Shi Tzu and her name is Bella she’s not
even a pound but Bullwinkle loves her and visa verse. Bullwinkle gets
up once at 5AM and is training outside already! Tomorrow she goes
to vet.
We will send you pictures. Thanks we love her! Barbara”

JUNIOR

pictures-001.jpgpictures-013.jpg

“Junior is great! he was a little shaken when we picked him up but within 5 minutes
he was alright! He has been great ever since! He goes for walks on a leash and
behaves very well! there have been a few pees in the house but that is only to be
expected! We are very happy with him and couldn’t ask for much more of a
personality in a dog! We went to the vet yesterday and he came in at 15 lbs and
healthy! (well had a tiny ear infection) He has slept two nights straight now in
his kennel without a sound through the night! We will follow up with some pics for
you guys soon!
Thanks for everything! We love our new little boy!!”

All Jazz’s pups are in their new homes now. Tonight she is unsettled. She is walking around and crying, probably looking for the last little guy that was shipped to Edmonton today.

Brooklyn pup:

p1020029.jpg

Little pup from Brooklyn got dehydrated the other day.Hydration is one of the most important things to monitor in new pups, as it can be one of the first signs of trouble. It can either be a result of inadequate nourishment, too much heat, or sickness. Our puppy is not sick so far so maybe he just did not get enough milk or was to close to the heat source.Accompanied with diarrhea and/or vomiting, it can be dangerous and fatal.

Hydration can be checked by pinching the skin on the back of the neck or on the top of the back. If hydration is OK, the pinched skin will bounce right back into place. If the pinched skin stays creased, the puppy is dehydrated and needs fluid replacement. Also a dehydrated pup’s coat will sometimes have a ruffled look or scruffy appearance. Another way to tell if a puppy is dehydrated is by the color of the urine. Using a cotton ball on the genital area, if the urine is dark and scant, it means the puppy is dehydrated and there is electrolyte depletion. Normal urine will flow freely and be light yellow in color.

To alleviate the situation, Lactated Ringers Solution (about 10 to 20cc’s, depending on the breed and size of the puppy) can be given under the skin, on the puppy’s back (subcutaneous provides faster relief than giving orally). This should be done very carefully and is not for the faint of heart. It helps to have a Vet or someone experienced show you the first time. Unfortunately many things go wrong in the middle of the night and one learns quickly that time is of the essence. Lactated Ringers Solution can be obtained from your Veterinarian or through various dog supply companies (but a prescription is needed).

If a puppy is mildly dehydrated and is not chilled, some breeders have had good success giving Pedialyte® orally, using a feeding tube

ABE AND TERRA BREEDING

Monday, December 10th, 2007

p1010991.jpgp1010992.jpgp1010999.jpgp1020006.jpgp1020013.jpgp1020018.jpgp1020022.jpg

Terra is in her heat and she will be paired with Abe when the right time comes.

Female goes into heat usually twice a year but this varies from female to female and it is perfectly normal if she is in heat just one a year or 3 times a year. It is highly discouraged to breed a dog during its first heat cycle. This is because the dog has not completely matured itself. Breeding too early can cause developmental problems in the bitch. Growth is stopped, needed calcium and nutrients is transferred to the puppies.

The actual heat cycle itself can be a frustrating thing for owners. It starts out with the female having a clear type of discharge. Then the vulva starts to swell and bleeding commences. Optimal breeding time is ten to fourteen days after the first sign of color (blood) although male dogs won’t care what day in the cycle it is. Make sure the dogs are kept separate during this time. Many injuries to dogs are seen because the male wouldn’t take no for an answer.

A female will show a willingness to be bred by “flagging” for an owner. This means she will raise her tail and move it to the side when the area right above her tail is scratched.

Once she has shown a willingness to be bred, it is time to place the two dogs together. When this is done, do not just throw them in the back yard together. It is preferable for someone to hold the head of the female while the actual breeding is taking place. Many males have been permanently scarred, by a female who took a sudden change of heart.

The actual act of breeding can take anywhere from ten to forty-five minutes. This is because a male dog’s physiology is not the same as that of a man. Dogs do not ejaculate; they seep through an engorged penis. The female’s vagina causes a tight ring around the penis and any attempt to stop the breeding at this point can damage both animals.

Once the male has entered, he will slowly move so that both front paws are on the same side of the female. One hind leg will come up and over the back of the female and they will be standing tail to tail. This is considered the tie.

Eventually, the penis will shrink back to its normal size, the tie is broken and both dogs will walk away. When this occurs, once again separate the two dogs. For optimal breeding results, repeat the process every other day until the female will no longer accept the male.

Write the first and last dates of breeding on a calendar. Normal gestation time for dogs is sixty-three days. This can be from either breeding. If a dog goes over sixty-five days, have her checked by your veterinarian.

There is one important thing to remember when breeding dogs. Keep the female up! A single female can be bred by a dozen males, have a dozen puppies with each having a different father. The best thing to do is keep the female crated, letting out only to walk on a leash or supervised in a fenced yard. She should never leave your site while outside though. Many neighborhood Romeos have no qualms about digging or climbing a fence.

The Humane Societies, Animal Shelters, and ‘Pounds’ are always overloaded with unwanted dogs because too many owners are either careless at this time, or think it would be educational or fun to have a litter of puppies or they want to show the miracle of life to their children.

This is bad thinking.

If you want to confirm the above statement, please watch this little video.
Although it relates to the Atlanta Humane Society, all Humane Societies and shelters are struggling with the same devastating situation. Fate of a Dog.

Unless you are prepared to be responsible for those puppies for the rest of their lives or have found good homes for your puppies don’t let your female to be bred.
If you want to become a breeder you have to keep in mind that there is a lot of responsibilities for you as a conscious human.
being. Read our adoption agreement to see that we are responsible for the dogs that we produce. All people who buy dogs from us have to agree that if at any point they can not keep the animal, they will return him/her to Steel City Bulldogs at no charge to the business.
