what to do when newborn puppy is crying constantly

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Colic:

If a puppy appears to be cramping, or if he/she is crying, the puppy could have gas. For this, give the puppy 1-2 drops of infant’s simethicone drops. If a puppy continues to cry, and the cry is constant, it could indicate trouble. Warning signs of a sick puppy include: constant crying, insufficient weight gain, no interest in nursing, poor color, extremely bloated abdomen, shallow breathing, cold to the touch, diarrhea, and vomiting. Contact your vet immediately!

Constipation:

If a puppy becomes constipated, give them a tiny amount (just one to a few drops, depending on their size) of white corn syrup.

It also may be a genetic defect in digestive system and there is nothing you can do – take puppy to the vet to ease the pain.

Sometimes putting a puppy close to your body will calm them down.

American Bulldogs and barking issue

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

loneliness/Boredom

American bulldogs are very social animals and love to interact with their owner or playmate. when left alone for long periods may bark for attention. providing interesting chew toys, hide and seek toys or food cubes ( that they have to work to get the food out) will often help occupy your american bulldog when you are absent/
When at home spend quality home with your american bulldog. Long walks and plenty of exercise such as chasing the ball or Frisbee will help them use up excess energy.
If you are unable to be home have a neighbor or reliable dog walker come in to exercise your dog. Doggie Daycare is another option.

Barking at passers by or distractions

American bulldogs are often territorial and feel the need to protect their environment. Introduce your american bulldog to your neighbors and encourage them to get to know each other.make sure people walking by your yard are not teasing your dog. This can lead to aggressive behavior problems. It may be necessary to alter the times that your american bulldog is outside to decrease exposure to these situations ( ex children walking by on their way to school) Attempt to supervise your american bulldog when outside. Make sure that the fencing safe.

Spay or neuter your american bulldog to decrease territorial behavior towards strangers.

For indoor dogs leave a radio or tv on to diminish outside noise. Close curtains or room doors that allow dogs access to an outside view.

Separation Anxiety

If your american bulldog is showing signs of stress when left alone seek professional advice from your vet , a behaviorist or a reputable obedience trainer.

Environmental or Nutritional Needs

Often an american bulldog will voice their distress when their needs are not met. Make sure your american bull dog has an adequate supply of food and water.

For american bulldogs that spend a long period of time outside make sure they have insulated shelter of appropriate size and construction. locate the shelter so it takes advantage of the sun in winter and available shade in the summer.

If the american bulldog is restrained by a tether on the property make sure that the dog has adequate room to move and cannot be tangled.
A clothesline run is preferable to stake in the ground. The animal care bylaw municipal code chapter 349 states that a tether must be minimum lenght of 3 meters.

Hypoglycemia in American Bulldog Puppies

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Hypoglycemia quickly develops in a newborn american bulldog that is not nursing frequently.

As hypoglycemia worsens, the american bulldog puppy becomes progressively more depressed and weak.

Without treatment it may develop muscle twitches or seizures and then american bulldog puppy will become unresponsive and comatose.

If american bulldog puppy is showing any of these signs place a few drops of corn syrup on its tongue. This simple procedure is often sufficient to revive a hypoglycemic american bulldog puppy. Also watch for signs of hypoglycemia over the next several days, as you adjust your american bulldog puppy’s feeding schedule.

http://www.leerburg.com/bottlefeeding.htm

Useful tip for feeding very weak american bulldog puppies – put a drop of corn syrup on your finger and place it in puppies mouth then run drops of formula on your finger – this will simulate suckling.

Hyperglycemic shock = body shutdown due to too much glucose in the blood resulting from lack of insulin to transport consumed glucose in food into the body’s cells for energy
Hypoglycemic shock = body shutdown due to too little glucose in the blood resulting from too much insulin

Dog Legistlation Council of Canada

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Dear fellow dog owner,
” I was just looking at my dog Jack.

he has a short coat, a short muzzle and a deep chest. He looks like Lab mix but who knows? There was a case in Toronto last week where a dog like Jack was seized because officials think he is a pit bull. I am nervous when I take him for a walk these days, people stare and make comments. I worry a lot being a dog owner in Ontario. Nobody seems to know which dogs fit the law and which don’t . And that’s one of the biggest problems – every dog and no dog is a pit bull. – Ontario citizen – received by email.

Breed banning is spreading like a virus The dog legislation council of Canada and other Banned Aid Coalition is fighting through courts not because OF A BREED BUT BECAUSE ONTARIO HAS REMOVED RIGHTS FROM PEOPLE WHO OWN DOGS. Citizens, regardless of their pet’s breed are open to warrant less entry and unreasonable search and seizure. They can be charged if the dog is considered to be “menacing” – which is undefined by law. Owners of some dogs are subject to the above plus restrictions on mobility, presumption of guilt and more.

How long until other breeds are added?

The precedent for banning of purebred dogs and dogs that are substantially similar physically has been set and was upheld in a recent Superior Court Decision. Click here to go to their website: http://www.doglegislationcouncilcanada.org/membership.html
