Dog food

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Here is kind of a guideline for grading dog foods. While I don’t agree with everything on here I think it is a good starting point (sorry it is so long, I don’t have the link any more)

How to grade your dog’s food:
Start with a grade of 100:

1) For every listing of “by-product”, subtract 10 points

2) For every non-specific animal source (”meat” or “poultry”, meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points

4) For every grain “mill run” or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. “ground brown rice”, “brewerâ⬢?s rice”, “rice flour” are all the same grain), subtract 5 points

6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points

7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnâ⬢?t allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnâ⬢?t allergic to beef), subtract 1 point

15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points

8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count “chicken” and “chicken meal” as only one protein source, but “chicken” and “” as 2 different sources), add 1 point

13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point

14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

94-100+ = A
86-93 = B
78-85 = C
70-77 = D
<70 = F

Weekend flew by. Teras pups are getting big. Guess its to be expected with only 3 pups in the litter. Took some pictures on the weekend there nice pups with some great colour.

Sabor and Angel that i told you about last week have adjusted quite well to the Steel City kennel. After spending more time with them there is no doubt in my minf that they will make great family companions. We are going to have them spayed/ neutered before they go and Angel has a growth on her belly wich we will have to get removed. Wont be cheap but shes worth it. Shes a great dog with tonnes of pesonality I’m thinking of keeping her myself but I know I cant to many dogs as it is. If you think you would be interested in these two send me an email or call they would love to meet you. If you would like to see pictures of them just click on the text

We had a puppy come back to us from the Tyra/ Bubba litter her name is Marilyn she is 4 month old or so. She was placed but came back to us due to no fault of her own. We really need to find a home for her quick. There is absolutely nothing wrong with her health or temperment wise. She is pretty much toilet trained and has no other bad habits she just needs a loving home Ive included her pics from the weekend.

Sometime this week I’ll be posting a bunch of puppy pictures that owners have sent in there are some great shots and I hope you enjoy them,.

Couple points of interest. Tyra is in heat and is enjoying Choppers company. Chopper hasnt lost any of his charm and this will be a another rock solid breeding. Tyra is a European Grand Champion and a Us Champion. She is also a decorated Iron dog not to mentiona sweet heart. Chopper of course is the one and only Big Papa Chopper that made our kennel what it is today. His father Jv’s smoken chopper is a Sr grand Champion with NKC and so is his grand father SS Fat boy Slim. So I cant wait to see these pups :)

Also looks like Blizzard is in heat so Chopper is on double duty poor guy so many dams so little time. Teras pups are getting huge since theres only three. We had one male and two females. The male is already sold hes going to the United States to a nice family. Pics will be up on the weekend when the camera dries out from its drop in the water bowl and i get a new memory card.

We also have two visitors at the kennel two sweethearts looking for a loving home. There names are Sabor and Angel. Sabor is a Cane Corso around 3 years old hes good with, kids, other animals and people. Very well mannered and I cant stress enough a sweetheart. His girl Angel is a very special dog shes a Argentinian Dogoeau. Shes deff and recently had a litter. Shes also great with kids and other animals from what ive seen If I wasnt a breeder and already have a number of pet dogs and 3 cats id gladly keep them myself. We are looking for a family home for these dogs. They will be fixed and up to date at time of addoption. They will have a complete written physical at time of adoption so thereis no surprises. The addoption fee is nada we would just ask for a hand with the vet bills and shipping if applicable. I’ll take some extensive video of the two on the weekend and post it on this blog. If you know someone that might be able to help call me or email this is a great opportunity.

Thats all for today I’m out.

Kinga gets back from holidays Wensday. She sends and does the paperwork here at Steel City. Not a moment to soon. Due to the fire and everything else steel city owners are looking for there papers and to tell you the truth I’m lost in it all. No worries well have it sorted out in no time. We have a two dams coming into heat right now still unconfirmed but looks like Blizzard and Tyra are both coming into heat. This will be tyra last breeding and i think ill hook her up with Chopper. That dog has it made when you think of it. He gets room service twice a day and snacks in between. Hes got relations with a good dozen dams. ” and they know about each other and dont mind “..Hes got better medical care than alot of people. I could go on but… Guess its true its a dogs life. Anyway bringing Chopper out of his retirement is gonna rock. With all the males weve produced no boy has really shined like him there never be another Papa Chopper in my book. I’m hoping Charlie steps up but as of yet he still hasnt grown into his shoes.

On the home/ kennel front, things justt keep getting busier and busier. had surgery last Thursday think it was and got righgt back to work when i got in fromn the hospital.. Friday was a tad slow but got back into it and seem to be doing ok. They say theres no rest for the wicked but to tell you the truth I cant remember the last wicked thing i did. I’m going to have to make a personal note to myself to addres this issue asap. On a good note stuff is getting done and im not falling behind to badly other than papers not being filled and everyone around the kennel having to take extra duties things are good.

I’m going to take some time out in the next ten days to finish of some started projects and then fully sink my teeth into getting this kennel renod. Should be just in time for the temporary hydro service to be hooked up. The awesome thing about that is ill be able to work some of the younger dogs on a more regular basis. In 2010 were set to start showing in the United States and both the dogs and I need practice. Thats it for today sweet dreams.

whats new.

Shows have been going well for us this year. our boy Bubba got some major recognition last weekend at the rare breeds show. He came in as top dog 9th over all ina field of over 500 dogs point wise for 2008. This was a major acomplishement for the American Bulldog here in Canada as this breed is in the fringes and some recognition definately cant hurt. At the same time Tera of steel City had a small litter of 3 sired by Bubba at home. Its pretty cool that the kennel is getting to the point where we can be at a show showing dogs and at the same time at the kennel delivering a litter and taking care of the other dogs.

Our breeding season has now oficiolly started early and its going to be a busy one. Probably the bussiest we have been in 3 years. We have 4 studs up to bat this season.. Ch Bubba, CH Chopper JR, Chopper is comoing out of retirement to sire some stock and my boy Charlie Brown is going to put in some work. On the ladies side we are stocked. Steel City Bully and Feisty of Swamp dog are both passed there second heat are will be coming into season this season. Tyra will be bred one last time and then retired probably to Chopper. Matilda of SS is up for one last litter for sure but well have to wait and see how the shedule is. Blizzard our new addition will be bred but to whom we dont know yet. Georgia is well overdue for a litter and should be bred this season but thats up to Kinga to decide wether she want to do the breeding.

Thats alot of pups alot of late nights and alot of cleaning up..lol. Its a good thing we have such a great team. The kennel is getting revamped also we are getting rid of the stone in the runs and pouring concreste slabs in the runs with a nice 3% slope from the center for easy cleaning and proper drainage. The inside of the kennel is getting a gut job. With new electrical, plumbing drywall and insulation. We will finnally have running water in the building yay no more garden hoses. Were also putting ina gas furnace with a propane conversion to keep the temperature even when the wood stove runs out at 4 AM and we dont wake up.

Things are also progressing with our home looks like we might be back in exactly 12 months from the month of the fire. Wich would be great to sleep in our own bed again. Or a new one just like our old one?

Pit Bull saves people from deadly snake

Breed-specific laws target even heroic pit bulls

By Linda Wilson Fuoco, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

When the deadly cottonmouth snake struck out at “her” children, Dixie never hesitated. The dog pushed the children aside, putting her 50-pound body between them and the snake. Dixie saved Frank Humphries, 9, and his 7-year-old twin siblings, Katie and Codi. But the venomous snake inflicted two bites on the face of the 16-month-old dog.

Valerie Humphries of Fayetteville, Ga., — the children’s mother and Dixie’s co-owner — killed the snake with an ax and rushed the dog to veterinarian Francoise Tyler. “Seeing Dixie’s unconscious body in the arms of that doctor was one of the worst things I’ve ever been through,” Humphries said. “Dr. Tyler had to keep her for several days, hooked up to intravenous antibiotics.”

Then the vet nominated Dixie for the Hero Dog category in a contest sponsored by the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association. Dixie won over 300 nominated dogs and this month is being inducted into the Georgia Animal Hall of Fame.

Now here comes one of the cheapest writing tricks in the book — the “O’Henry ending”:

Dixie is a pit bull.

The breed of a hero-dog shouldn’t matter, really. But it does matter because this is a breed of dog that is feared, hated and reviled by so many people, including many who call themselves animal lovers.

Many individuals and organizations, such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, are trying to outlaw this breed. They can’t stop at merely despising pit bulls and related breeds, including American Staffordshire terriers and Staffordshire bull terriers. They want to outlaw pit bulls, even those owned by loving, responsible dog owners. Even child-loving life-savers like Dixie.

Dixie is reason enough to rail against breed-specific legislation — laws that target an entire breed. Other breeds are under siege all over the country, especially rottweilers. Proposed legislation in other parts of the country target an ever-growing list of breeds, including boxers, Siberian huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Akitas, chow chows, German shepherds and Doberman pinschers.

Call me pro-choice on dog ownership. I think people who love dogs should be free to own as many dogs as we can take care of — as long as we are loving, responsible owners and the dogs create no problems and pose no threat to people, property and other animals. We have the right to buy a pure-bred from a responsible breeder or to rescue a homeless mixed-breed from a shelter. And we should certainly be able to love the breed of our choice.
