I took Charlie and Feisty ( American Bulldogs) for a walk down to the protected lands behind our house earlier. Feisty is a pleasure to walk and is coming along very nicely as an American bulldog gal goes. She has got great proportions for an American bulldog : big bones a tone of muscle in all the right spots. Her high metabolism really shows of her muscles well. Her temperament is a little timid and submissive outside of her American bulldog kennel but not to the point t hat its embarrassing on a walk. Good part is American bulldog Feisty doesn’t pull, stays close and she doesn’t cause a scene when strangers approach. The folks at swamp dog know how to breed a good American bulldog. In my opinion they are one of the best American Bulldog kennels stateside that I ve had the pleasure of coming into contact with.

American Bulldog Charlie and I have a great rapport but today the little prick pissed me off. Never a good thing when a 4 legged tail wagger can get your blood going. I guess my own state of mind is to blame, maybe my thoughts were elsewhere. In retrospect they were. I knew what he was doing, was pissing me off and I knew why he was doing it. Also I knew how to correct him but my anger and poor state of mind was in the way.

Dogs have been around as long as we have been roaming this place called earth either by our side or on the wayside. In one shape or other dogs have evolved in there own way and along this journey have established a code of conduct a social order that is common knowledge among all dogs. These rules or guidelines are passed from mother to pup through DNA and the first weeks of the pups life before Mum kicks them out of the den. The smart ones pick up and go on to father multiple litters of and spend their days scratching, licking, chewing, farting and sleeping while we cater to their needs. There are the halfwits that need a kick in the ass to get with the program but eventually find the right handler to live out there time.

Before I get off topic the bottom line here is that dogs are born with a purpose. To reproduce. Everything they do has something to do with getting it on and pumping out some offspring. They eat to be strong to breed. They sleep to be rested to breed they mount other dogs to show there dominance over other dogs to breed. List goes on.. A male may bark at another to keep him away from his gal or just to let him to keep on moving. When your boy American bulldog lifts his leg on the neighborhood fire hydrant that all the dogs frequent. He is leaving a business card. When another rolls up to the hydrant its like he is picking up a business card. If this is a female the card will tell her that this is a male roughly how old his vitality his over all health, weather he is carrying any diseases and and his standing in the pack and probably much, much more. Its funny how a sprinkle of pee can say so much about a being.

Think about that. Its no coincidence that your dog just doesn’t dump the whole bladder 2 inches from your door and run back inside. When our American bulldog Big Papa Chop goes for a walk he will inspect and dribble at least a few dozen times in a span of a couple hundred feet if hes been deprived of some loving. If he is a happy American bulldog he just might leave his business in a few spots just to put the word out that hes in demand and available if needed. Having had the privilege of being with American Bulldog Chopper for the span of his life this far all I can say is that he is a straight up champ player and the ladies know it. Not all dogs are made equal. Some are better than others and its amazing how nature manifest this. Take a look. Strong will survive.
One step further. Take one male American bulldog and put him in one run put the other male American bulldog in an adjacent run. Introduce the American bulldog gal in hat to the first stud. Give them some time to sniff court and do whatever they do. Then take her out put her in with the other stud. Give them some time. Now the female has been in contact with two studs. Here is the cool thing. She will pick one. She can figure out from interacting and through sense of smell among other things which one is stronger/ healthier more fertile and a better mach for her DNA make up. Ultimately she knows how to spot a winner or weener ..What to look for down to the dna level, who will produce stronger offspring for her. WOW. The cherry on the cake to me is once she pics her stud the one that compliments her best the one that will give her pups the best chance of survival in this messed up place we dwell in she wont get it on with him until she is at the exact right time of her cycle. Dogs heat last 3 weeks . First week coming into heat ” swelling, spotting” , a week or more like 5 days to get it on. and 7 to 10 days coming out of it. That’s basically 21 days which 5 of which she can actually get pregnant. If you ever have a chance to watch a couple dogs get it on you will just have to laugh if you are a guy. Once the gal picks her boy but isn’t quite at the right time of her cycle SHE WILL NOT let her mount her and enter her. The stud is stuck at third base till she is ready for the act to produce offspring. There is nothing he can do about it either lol. I don’t mean to laugh but its painfully funny, the gal will just tease the hell out of the stud and keep his interest till the time for mother nature to do her thing is right . The stud will be crying, slobbering, panting, sometimes hyperventilating and begging and she will just string him along until everything lines up and pow POW POW we have a lock .. Once its on its on they will go at it, like dogs as the saying goes. But amazing how calculated it is. For every good lock in a fertile American Bulldog expect 2 to 4 pups, with 3 good locks from healthy prime couple we have seen 16 pups or less, 8 is the average.
Breeders tend to keep female pups from large litters, that isn’t by chance some moms have big litter other just 2 or 3 pups. Breeders like big litters. So if you keep a girl from a litter of 16 chances are she can duplicate that for you, given the right circumstances.
As a footnote large litter in dogs are a way of combating mother nature as the odds of survival are better when numbers are greater simple math.
Now back to mother nature. Nature is a unstoppable force. Man has been trying to tame her since he got here and shes been kicking his ass ever since. You cant beat her shes seen it all played every hand, no Einstein is going to teach her a new trick. If man could just learn to play her game and give her her due it would be a beautiful world. But egos and bank accounts, arrogance, hatred, plain stupidity,bullshit seem to win the day.

Since im on a rant already I want to keep my rant to one subject lol. The subject is how amazing the dog culture and world really is.
Some time ago I came to realize something quite cool. Picture this if survival is the name of the game and you want your offspring to have the best chance at it how can you put the odds in your favor. Of course you cant get on a plane and relocate to a place with better life expectancy or a higher standard of living or go get your phd to get yourself in a higher tax bracket you cant even pick and choose your diet because what you got is what it is.. if you could do better you would have already done it. But what a dog in heat can do is take on multiple partners. Now by multiple partners she will pick the strongest of the offered. So lets say there are 6 studs milling around she will take 2 or so. Why though? and no its not because shes a dog and happy to hump whatever comes up. A female can carry distinctively different offspring from each partner shes been with throughout her fertile stage of her heat. Think of the advantage. Pretty frikken cool.
