Summer safety tips to beat the heat for American bulldog owner

You may want to sun and surf in the summer but your American bulldog want shade and water!!!

Without shade and water American bulldogs can overheat, become ill and die within short time. Summer is when american bulldogs have the greatest risk of injury and heat related health problems.

Watch for signs of heat stroke:

Signs include rapid panting, lots of drooling, hot skin, twitching muscles, vomiting and dazed look.
Act quickly to cool down your american bulldog - wrap it in a towel soaked with cool ( not cold) water, or place it in a bathtub with cool water or pour cool water over the pet. You can also put ice packs on American bulldogs head . Consult your vet if your american bulldog has heat stroke.

Provide Plenty of fresh water

Dogs can only sweat by panting or through pads on their feet. Water loss from the wet surfaces of their mouth and nose helps lower their body temperature. american Bulldogs need fresh water at home and outdoors, so take water with you for your pet.

Watch for sun burn

Sensitive paws burn easly. Water, sand and rock at the beach reflect sunlight - your american bulldog could get sunburn.Control you american bulldog exposure to sun - limit the time and provide the shade.

Find a cool spot

keep air circulating indoors for american bulldogs - use a fan or air conditionging. Provide shade outdoors for American bulldogs. A gentle sprinkle from garden hose is also helpful to keep them cool.

Watch how much american bulldogs eat and excersise.
Overeating during hot weather could lead to overheating - let your pets eat less. Avoid exercise and vigorous activity during the hottest part of the day.

Never leave your american bulldog in parked car!!

even the window open slightly or parked in shade when the temperature reaches 30C the temperature inside the car can reach 50C in minutes. This is extremely dangerous for dogs. Although your american bulldog may want to come with you , it is much kinder to leave it at home with plenty of fresh cool water and shade.
If your pet is accidentally locked in your car or if you see pet in distress locked in the car call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

American Bulldogs and Summer

July 10th, 2008

Should you take your American Bulldog for vacation or should you leave him behind?

Option 1 - Bringing american bulldog along

The first question you should ask yourself is will your american bulldog have a good time with you on your vacation. Are there excersise options? Is the beach near the busy road? Is your american bulldog trained enough to go with you. Is s/he friendly to other dogs and people? Untrained american bulldog can be costly and embarrassing to you but it also gives a breed a bad name which reduces their access in society. How does s/he do in the car? How well does s/he handle heat.

Option 2- Leaving american bulldog behind

Something to think about it when you want to leave your american bulldog behind is where he would be staying. Dogs that are used to being kenneled will not find it difficult to be left in the kennel, but dogs accustomed to living in the house with people might find even the best kept kennel very hard to deal with. House sitter or somone who boards dogs in their home might be an option.

Hi Kinga and Martin!
We took Dozer to the vet today and got his first set of shots and deworming meds.
The vet thoroughly checked him over and said he was in perfect health. He had some
big fans at the vet clinic, he’s already charming everyone he meets! I’ve attached a
couple pictures. Rob with Dozer after our drive home, and Dozer with his new toys.
Thanks for the great pup, we’ll definitely keep in touch.

Age 7 means something for your American Bulldog

July 7th, 2008

Around the age of 7 american bulldogs enter their ‘golden years”. The decisions you make about your american bulldog’s nutrition and exercise will have a great impact on your older american bulldog. You can help make the rest of your pets life healthier and happier. Although your american bulldog may not appear different at the age of seven, his or her nutritional and physical needs have changed enough that the feeding and excerise routine you have grown used to may not longer be ideal. You can reduce the risk of health problems and help your older pet live longer with regular vet care and nutrition that’s specifically designed for older dog.

Take your time with american bulldog training

July 1st, 2008

People usually think that the more training they do with a young american bulldog the better the dog will become and that they will be able to do less training later.

Over training the young american bulldog pup and new dog may lead to different then desired affect.

When you first take your american bulldog puppy home he needs to learn the rules of the house - first one is that the toilet is outside. You can teach your american bulldog puppy at this young age how to sit, lay down, shake a paw and walk nicely on the leash.Teach him to sit and reward him for his attempts as well as for the success. This way learning will become fun for your american bulldog. Once the dog know how to sit you can teach him to sit beside you. At first he gets his reward for sitting and then later he gets it when he sits beside you.

Very important command to teach your dog is come. People usually call their dogs and then request them to sit. When your dogs comes when called celebrate that firs and reward him. If you keep asking more and more then the american bulldog will feel like he never does enough to get a reward. Remember to reward good behavior and to make sure your american bulldog understands what you want him to do first.
