American bulldog Capitan Adoption story

March 16th, 2011

Hi Martin and Kinga,
hope you both are well, sorry it took me a little while to respond I have been so busy lately. When you called tonight Martin I was having a late dinner with my girlfriend’s family.
thank you for the puppy pictures and all the paperwork, I think I will go ahead and register Captain in my name for the time being.
Can you remember what name he was originally registered under? Was it Captain or Capitan or Bubbalou or do I even need to know that for the new registration?
Captain is doing very well so far and is responding even better than I thought he would to my training regime. Driving home on Friday after he challenged me in front of you I was a little worried that it might take longer than I thought but this has so far not been the case as I think I gained his respect at that point in front of the both of you. After I got home that day I took him for a very long walk to establish myself as his new pack leader and I then introduced him to my house using my special routine. For now he is being made to follow a lot of rules until he learns to respect the house and he’s responding well to this.
At first he tended to do a lot of looking around on our walks as if to say ‘where the hell am I’? and he was hesitant to play at all but I can tell his confidence is starting to come back and we are starting to bond.
I’ve already introduced him to my other dog, he has made a few attempts to lunge at and mount my aussie shepherd but I was there to control the situation each time and communicate to him that this is not allowed and he seems for the most part to be getting to point and for the most part he is being respectful.
We’ve been for several long pack walks with the three of us so far, I think Captain has a very good temperament and a lot of potential. I can tell that he is a good dog that was mainly just misunderstood and maybe a little bit frustrated.
Earlier today I gave him a bath in my tub which was a bit of an ordeal mostly because he didn’t want to have anything to do with any running water touching his body, but all he did was try to avoid the situation. He’s now smelling and looking a lot cleaner and his coat feels nice.
I’ve introduced him to my girlfriend and my mother without incident, my brother and my uncle will both be here at some point next week to work with him a little bit. He met a man and his dog through the fence at one point when I had him off leash and was so polite that the stranger was shocked when I told him that Captain was labelled as a dangerous animal in the US.
On our walks in the city he gets so many smiles and compliments that it’s getting almost ridiculous, here I thought my shepherd was a beautiful dog but Captain is definitely drawing a lot more attention than we usually get.
Anyway that’s pretty much been the life of Captain since I picked him up from you guys, I think he has a bright future ahead of him as far as the training goes.
He has had some pretty bad diarrhea since he got here but that usually is just temporary when a young dog changes his diet.
One thing I wanted to ask you about was that he seems to have a red hairless patch on his face, some kind of sore or a hot spot I’m guessing? Any ideas? I’m calling my vet tomorrow to make an appointment for a checkup (they were closed all weekend), I don’t think the sore is anything too serious but I was wondering if maybe it’s something that bulldogs get sometimes?
Anyway sorry for this being so long but I wanted you guys to get a picture of just how well he’s doing.
Feel free to contact me anytime with regards to Captain and if you ever know someone in need of a good dog trainer I would be honored if you recommended me.
I’ll be in touch with more updates on Captain in the future.
